Biomethane plants

The purpose is to produce energy from animal-origin waste generated on farms. This solution helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions, ensures sustainable farming operations, and contributes to strengthening the country’s energy independence.

In Alksniupiai village, Radviliškis district, the biomethane power plant of the “Agrokoncernas Group” operates by producing energy from animal-origin waste generated on farms. Livestock manure and slurry are processed into biogas, which, after being purified to the required level, is fed into the main gas pipeline managed by the company “Amber Grid”.

The biomethane power plant is located next to the agricultural company “Draugas”, which is part of the “Agrokoncernas Group” and specializes in livestock farming. Waste that typically poses environmental challenges is delivered for processing.

This process significantly reduces methane gas emissions into the atmosphere, helping to protect the ozone layer. The material remaining after processing animal-origin waste is used as a fertilizer, which is more environmentally friendly and no longer emits unpleasant odors.

Sustainable Farming

Manure and slurry processed at the power plant return to the fields as eco-friendly fertilizers, ensuring a sustainable agricultural cycle and a cleaner environment for residents. Compared to untreated manure, odor emissions from the processed substrate are reduced by 80-85%.

Each year, the power plant processes around 110,000 tons of animal-origin waste from farms, producing approximately 2.45 million cubic meters of biomethane. This amount of gas is sufficient to provide heating energy for about 3,000 homes annually.

The plant is operated by a team of 4 employees who ensure smooth operations and process safety.

Future plans: four more power plants

This is the first biomethane power plant owned by the “Agrokoncernas Group”. The second plant is being designed near one of the largest and most modern cow farm complexes in Europe, currently under construction in Bebrujai village, Radviliškis district.

In the upcoming Bebrujai plant, processed animal waste will be converted into methane gas. This gas will be transported by specialized vehicles to the already operational biomethane plant in Alksniupiai village, where it will be fed into the main gas pipeline via the existing injection hub.

This same principle will apply to other planned power plants that will not have direct access to the main natural gas pipeline.

Project implemention

The biomethane power plant project was implemented by “Biokona”, a Lithuanian company specializing in the construction of biogas and biomethane plants. This project was funded by the European Union.

Certificates

The biomethane production process is audited and certified to ensure compliance with the requirements of the European Union’s Renewable Energy Promotion Program.

For each unit of energy (MWh) produced from biomethane, an EU-approved Guarantee of Origin certificate is issued.
