In the spring of 2022, the first private “Girls’ Basketball Center” was established in Druskininkai as a long-term project aimed at nurturing top-level basketball players who could represent the Lithuanian girls’ national basketball team and international league clubs in the future.
The initiators of this project are the AIBA Basketball Academy, the Lithuanian Basketball Federation, and the Druskininkai Municipality. The Agrokoncernas Group of companies is the main sponsor, ensuring full support for the athletes, including accommodation, training, education, and scholarships. Promising athletes are provided with the best conditions to achieve both sports and personal excellence.
The center’s athletes are selected from various cities across the country. They train according to a specially developed sports and academic program coordinated by a team of professional coaches. The young basketball players reside in the Druskininkai Olympic Sports Center, where all conditions for growth and development are provided.
The young athletes not only strive to become professional basketball players but are also taught personal leadership and teamwork skills.
It is expected that this long-term project will contribute to the revival of girls’ basketball in Lithuania, ensure a sustainable system for training athletes, and help achieve top results on the international stage.
The owner of the Agrokoncernas Group, Ramūnas Karbauskis, firmly believes that the long-term goal for the Girls’ Basketball Center’s players to join the elite of world girls’ basketball is realistic and achievable.
“Lithuania has talented players capable of playing not only in the domestic league but also in international clubs and representing the national team. However, it is evident that girls’ basketball lacks popularity and sufficient support. Therefore, as a leading agricultural company, we aim to contribute and support where the situation is currently most challenging,” commented R. Karbauskis on the decision to support girls’ basketball.
Currently, the center established in Druskininkai is the only one of its kind in Lithuania
